IBCS 2021 Holy Spirit, Breathe On Me!

Holy Spirit, Breathe on Me!

Welcome to the 2021 Institute for Black Catholic StudiesHoly Spirit, Breathe on Me!

June 27 – July 16, 2021

In its 42nd summer session, the IBCS community gathers under the auspices of the Holy Spirit to reflect on God’s particular gift of Blackness to the Church and society.  We are called - students, faculty, and staff – to study the divine gift through the lens of Catholic theology and Christian gospel values to discern how God is acting through the Black Body of Christ to bring salvation to the world. The signs of the time also call us as a diverse community of faith to 1) recognize the myriad ways that the Black Body of Christ is suffering, grieving, exhausted, struggling to breathe and 2) grow together in cultural competence to develop pastoral strategies and church policies that address the indignities, injustice, and sin that challenge the humanity of all God’s people. Although in many ways, the cross marks our daily living, Black believers are Resurrection people. That characteristic reflects in the Institute community life of prayer, worship, and celebration that empowers members to be different, do differently. Through the June 27 IBCS Orientation and the Opening Mass, Christ calls us from across the nation through the technology of remote learning to be a holy, committed presence of his Body. And heeding his call, he breathes on us and speaks: “Receive the Holy Spirit”. Jn 20:22
