About the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine
Xavier University of Louisiana has partnered with Ochsner Health to establish the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, creating the only historically Black college and university (HBCU) medical school in the Gulf South. The Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine will create a strong physician workforce to improve the health of our communities by building the healthcare workforce of the future. The new medical school affirms Xavier’s long legacy of advancing healthcare excellence and education.
The Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine is now the fifth historically Black medical school in the United States, bringing new opportunities to communities in Louisiana and the nation and offering stellar medical education for generations to come. The medical college will create economic opportunity for Louisiana when it opens in Benson Tower within the growing downtown New Orleans BioDistrict.
"In the 1920s, Saint Katharine Drexel sent her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to visit leading medical schools to learn how to best prepare Xavier scholars for the next phase of medical education. The Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine continues the work envisioned by our founder."
- Dr. Reynold Verret, President of Xavier University of Louisiana
