Resources for High School Students
Ochsner Health offers several programs for high school students interested in healthcare, including the hands-on Ochsner STAR Summer Program and STEM Pathfinder Program to explore healthcare careers, the Junior Volunteer Program for hands-on hospital experience, the Sports Medicine Summer Internship for athletes, and the Nursing Pre-Apprenticeship Program for career pathways in nursing and allied health. These programs provide opportunities to learn clinical skills, participate in scientific experiments, and receive mentorship to prepare for future healthcare careers.
Xavier University of Louisiana offers several programs for high school students, including the Star Programs for STEM prep, the SOAR X program for rising 11th and 12th graders focused on health science/law, the Achieve Dual Enrollment program allowing students to take college courses for credit, the Center of Excellence for pharmacy-focused students, and the Upward Bound program for academic support.

This weeklong program offers high school students in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and St. Tammany parish the opportunity to explore careers with hands-on experiences in sports medicine, athletic training, performance training and physical therapy.
Junior Volunteer: Junior Volunteer Program | Ochsner Health
The Junior Volunteer Program is offered at multiple locations during the summer for high school students ages 14 to 17. It is a way for students to explore a future healthcare career by gaining hospital knowledge.
Pre Nursing Apprenticship Program: Nursing Pre-Apprenticeship | Ochsner Health
The nursing pre-apprenticeship is a nursing training program, in which students have the option to pursue an accelerated career pathway to licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN). Students who desire to continue the program after their sophomore year of high school enroll in pre-set dual enrollment courses in their junior and senior years of high school. After high school graduation, the students who complete dual enrollment will have a choice to enroll in Delgado Charity School of Nursing and be given the opportunity to transition into a paid apprenticeship with Ochsner Health.

SOAR X is Xavier University of Louisiana’s flagship pre-college program. Dr. J.W. Carmichael established the SOAR (Stress On Analytical Reasoning) program nearly 50 years ago, in 1977, with the goal of preparing high school students for the rigorous mathematical and scientific scholarship that would be expected of them as undergraduates.

The COE Summer Enrichment Program is a three-week program designed to introduce and expose participants to the Pharmacy profession. Various activities will be completed to give participants hands-on experiences in different aspects of pharmacy. The dynamic field of pharmacy offers several career opportunities which will be discussed by pharmacy guest speakers.
Upward Bound: Upward Bound | Xavier University of Louisiana
Academic Year
The academic year program consists of opportunities for students to attend Saturday School where students participate in academic classes on Xavier’s campus taught by certified high school teachers or college instructors. Classes include current high school and college academic subjects as well as ACT preparation and testing. During Saturdays, students receive academic reinforcement in their current high school courses.
Summer Program
Six-week non-residential program for rising 9th through 11th-grade students. Students will attend classes on Xavier’s campus Monday through Thursday where they are enrolled in classes that will prepare them for the upcoming academic school year. Fridays are reserved for Field Trips.
Summer Bridge Program
A six-week residential program for seniors who are enrolled in Upward Bound Math & Science and graduated from their respective high schools. The students are enrolled in at least 4 credit college courses in addition to completing an internship in their STEM career of interest. Qualified recipients will receive free tuition, room, and board, and meals.
