Xavier University of Louisiana’s name, logos, seals, wordmarks, trademarks, and other identifying marks are valuable institutional assets. The University maintains a licensing program to ensure that Xavier-branded merchandise represents the University appropriately and that its trademarks are used consistently and with authorization.

This policy applies to merchandise produced for sale, distribution, fundraising, events, organizations, alumni activities, departments, or any other purpose involving Xavier University of Louisiana’s name, trademarks, logos, or other protected marks.

Licensing Administration, Vendors, and Design Approval

Xavier University of Louisiana partners with Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) to administer the University’s trademark licensing program. CLC works with the University to manage licensed vendors and facilitate the review and approval of merchandise bearing Xavier’s name, logos, seals, wordmarks, and other protected trademarks. Please note that the process to become a licensed vendor can take up to three months.

All merchandise using Xavier University of Louisiana trademarks must be produced by a vendor appropriately licensed through CLC. In addition, each individual design must be submitted through the University’s licensing process and approved before production, sale, or distribution.

A vendor’s status as an official Xavier licensee does not constitute blanket approval to create or sell Xavier-branded merchandise. Licensure of a vendor and approval of a specific design are separate requirements. Approval of one design does not constitute approval of future designs, variations, or products.

Xavier University of Louisiana retains final authority over the use of its name, trademarks, and brand.

University Marks and Brand Standards

Xavier trademarks and brand elements must be reproduced in accordance with University brand standards. Designs that alter, distort, stretch, recolor, reconstruct, embellish, or otherwise modify University marks may not be approved.

This includes unauthorized modifications to the University seal, wordmarks, logos, typography, colors, proportions, borders, or other identifying elements.

Use of Xavier’s official colors and approved accent colors must also comply with University brand standards. The presence of an approved University color within a design does not, by itself, make the design compliant.

Use of an Individual’s Image or Likeness

Xavier University of Louisiana does not approve merchandise incorporating an individual’s image, likeness, photograph, portrait, illustration, signature, or other personal identifying characteristics in conjunction with Xavier trademarks or branding.

This prohibition applies to all individuals, including, but not limited to, current or former presidents and University leaders; faculty and staff members; coaches; students and student-athletes; alumni; honorary degree recipients; celebrities; public figures; speakers; guests; and other individuals associated with Xavier.

A vendor’s license to use Xavier University trademarks does not authorize the vendor, purchaser, organization, or any other party to use an individual’s name, image, or likeness on Xavier-branded merchandise. This prohibition applies regardless of the individual’s affiliation with the University and regardless of whether permission has been obtained from the individual, the individual’s representative, estate, or another rights holder.

University ownership of or access to a photograph does not authorize the use of the individual depicted in that photograph on merchandise. Likewise, permission to use an image for University editorial, news, archival, social media, website, or promotional purposes does not constitute permission to use that image on merchandise.

Responsibility for Approval

Before ordering or commissioning Xavier-branded merchandise, purchasers must confirm:

  1. The vendor is appropriately licensed through CLC to produce merchandise bearing Xavier University of Louisiana trademarks.
  2. The specific design has been submitted through the University’s licensing process and approved before production.
  3. The design does not incorporate an individual’s image, likeness, photograph, portrait, illustration, signature, or other personal identifying characteristics.

Merchandise must not enter production, be offered for sale, or be distributed until all required approvals have been secured.

University Authority

Xavier University of Louisiana reserves the right to approve, deny, or require modification of any proposed use of its trademarks on merchandise and may require the discontinuation of merchandise that uses Xavier trademarks without authorization or does not conform to University licensing and brand standards.

Questions about whether a vendor, product, design, image, or proposed use is authorized should be directed to Xavier University Communications before production or purchase .
