Who is a Mathematician?

The tasks assigned to mathematicians are as diverse as the companies that employ them. They are often assigned to serve as mathematical consultants within teams of other specialists (engineers, accountants, sociologists, to name a few) and they are often part of a scientific team. Due to their exposure to diverse areas of mathematics (calculus and non-calculus based analysis, numerical analysis, statistics, operations research), they may perform the function of researching and guiding a project group to and through a certain method of analysis. The increased use of computers has greatly influenced the role of a mathematician. They may perform the function of preparing a problem to obtain a solution on computing devices. In many instances this may mean programming on the computer. In other cases the mathematician may never actually see the computer.

In short, mathematicians are highly skilled professionals who can apply their knowledge of mathematics to a wide range of fields. They are often involved in research, problem-solving, and data analysis.

Xavier University's Mathematics Department offers varied options in coursework and major areas of study which are designed to give the student a sound foundation in the Mathematical Sciences. Successfully completing one of the programs will prepare the student for graduate school or to enter a variety of careers, including actuarial science, banking, engineering, medicine, law, and teaching, among many others. Several opportunities exist for financial aid and scholarships.

Mathematics Education (Grades 6-12), B.S.

This major provides students with deep knowledge of mathematical principles along with the teaching skills needed to effectively educate students in grades 6-12. The curriculum blends math coursework with pedagogical training to produce quality math teachers.
Mathematics, B.S.

Mathematics, B.S.

This traditional mathematics major gives students a rigorous foundation in mathematical theory and methods. Students take courses across analysis, algebra, statistics, applied math and more. The program prepares students for careers or graduate study in mathematics and related fields.
Statistics and Biostatistics Accelerated, B.S.

Statistics and Biostatistics Accelerated, B.S.

This accelerated major combines statistics and biostatistics to provide advanced data analysis and modeling skills. The curriculum equips students to apply statistical and computational methods to real-world data in fields like biology, medicine, and more.
Statistics, B.S.

Statistics, B.S.

This statistics major develops students' expertise in statistical theory, data analysis methods, and the application of statistics across disciplines. Core courses cover probability, statistical modeling, data visualization, and big data analytics. Graduates pursue careers as statisticians, analysts, and data scientists.

In today’s world there is an ongoing effort to quantify many aspects of our society. There is always a need for mathematicians to numerically formulate and solve new problems. There is demand for good applied mathematicians in all areas of our technological world: business, engineering, government, science, and others. People at the helm of mathematics are vital to our progress as a society. Careers for such people are diverse and abundant.  A mathematician may be employed in the areas of:

  • Statistics
  • System Analysis
  • Teaching
  • Civil Service (Government)
  • Actuarial Sciences
  • Consulting
  • Operations Research
  • Industrial Research and Development
