Xavier University of Louisiana graduates Hannah Jordan and Jaymison Tillery have made history as the first two Xavierites to commission as second lieutenants in the United States Space Force.
Jordan, who earned a degree in Biology Pre-Med with a minor in Chemistry, and Tillery, who graduated with a degree in Public Health Sciences and minors in Healthcare Management and Aerospace Studies, completed four years of ROTC leadership and military training through Tulane University’s crosstown Air Force ROTC program while balancing rigorous academic studies, campus involvement, and community service. Their commissioning represents a historic milestone for Xavier University of Louisiana and reflects the university’s longstanding mission of preparing students to lead and serve in a global society.
“As a Xavierite, commissioning is just another step in fulfilling the school’s mission…to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society,” Jordan said. “I am extremely grateful to not only benefit from a legacy of excellence but also contribute to it.”
Jordan continued that her Xavier experience taught her lessons she plans to carry throughout her military career.
“Throughout my time as a student, I have learned patience, time management, and service among all else, and I plan to take these lessons as I continue to progress,” she said. “To the future Xavierites, receive opportunities with gladness and be patient in letting God forge your path.”
At Xavier, Jordan distinguished herself as both a scholar and a leader. She served as secretary of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, deputy commander for public affairs in AFROTC, and a peer mentor for XULA MOLE. She also held memberships in the National Society of Leadership and Success, the American Chemical Society, the Biomedical Honor Corps, and the XULA Memphis Club. Her accomplishments earned several honors, including the Xavier University Department of Chemistry Service Award, the AFROTC College Scholarship Ribbon, multiple Academic Honors distinctions, and completion of the United States Air Force Academy’s Azimuth Space Program.
Tillery likewise built a strong legacy of leadership and service during his time at Xavier. He served as Senior Class Vice President and as Brother and Historian of the Beta Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., while also working beyond campus through CrescentCare’s Prevention Department, helping expand outreach and access to sexual health services across the Greater New Orleans community.
A passionate advocate for underserved populations, Tillery said the commissioning reflects years of dedication and preparation.
“We have been part of the ROTC program for the past four years and have successfully completed all requirements for commissioning,” Tillery said.
Established in 2019, the United States Space Force is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping guardians to protect U.S. and allied interests in space. As second lieutenants, Jordan and Tillery will begin careers at the forefront of national defense, technology, and innovation. Their achievement adds to Xavier’s growing legacy of graduates who continue to break barriers and lead in STEM, healthcare, public service, and beyond.
