Opera Workshop Presents "Carmen," Showcasing the Next Generation of Artistic Excellence

Join Xavier University of Louisiana’s Opera Workshop for "Carmen," a captivating production that brings passion, drama, and extraordinary student talent to the stage. Set for April 24–25 at Xavier's Administration Building Auditorium (1 Drexel Drive, New Orleans), this bold interpretation of the classic opera invites audiences into a world of intensity and artistry, showcasing the remarkable vocal and theatrical abilities of Xavier’s emerging performers. This special performance highlights the artistry, discipline, and dedication of Xavier students in a way that promises to be both memorable and inspiring.

Founded in 1934 by Sister Mary Elise Sisson, SBS, Xavier’s opera program was designed to ensure that students were exposed to the arts of the time despite Jim Crow laws that excluded people of color from cultural and recreational spaces. Within a year of its establishment, Xavier became the first HBCU to stage a full-scale opera, helping shape New Orleans’ identity as a leading city for opera. Sisson’s foundational work introduced generations of students to the genre and expanded cultural access across the region.

After decades of producing renowned performers and providing world-class instruction, Xavier’s opera program has continued to evolve while maintaining its legacy of excellence. Alumni such as Debria Brown, ‘58, known for her signature role in Bizet’s "Carmen" at New York City Center Opera; Gail Gilmore, who has performed in opera houses around the world including Teatro de la Fenice, La Scala, and Carnegie Hall; Lavergne Monette, ‘72, ‘19, who has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera; and soprano Annabelle Bernard, who spent 40 years with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, exemplify the program’s enduring impact. Today, the program is being revitalized to acknowledge its rich history while preparing students for a multi-skilled future. The program offers students experience in performance, production, stagecraft, and arts administration.
