Civil Rights Symposium, Project 1619 to Highlight Xavier Alumni Homecoming

New Orleans LA – A civil rights symposium featuring three nationally renowned alumni and a dialogue on a landmark publication unfolding the legacy of the institution of slavery in the United States will highlight the week-long celebration of Alumni Homecoming 2019 at Xavier University of Louisiana Wednesday-Sunday, Nov. 06-10.

The Dr. Rudy Lombard ’61 Symposium on Civil Rights, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 08, at 11:30 a.m. in the Administration Auditorium, will bring together trailblazing Xavier alumni for an inspiring conversation, “Unapologetically Black, Distinctively Xavier: Alumni Living the Mission.” Panelists will include NCAA Executive Vice President of Inclusion and Human Resources Katrice Albert ’94, Drexel University law professor Dr. Wendy Greene ‘99, and Schott Foundation for Public Education President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. John Jackson ’94.

Then on Saturday, Nov. 09, at 11:30 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom, 2018 honorary degree recipient Nikole Hannah-Jones, the lead author for New York Times  “The 1619 Project”, will return to campus for the Sankofa Lecture to discuss the landmark piece and its impact on America.

Both events are free and open to the general public.

Other scheduled activities for homecoming week include a distinguished alumni music concert, a Jazz Ensemble concert, a joint student/alumni Celebration on the Yard, three late night parties, a golf tournament, a parade, a tailgate brunch, intercollegiate basketball and volleyball games, a Homecoming Banquet, and much, much more. Other events that are open to the general public: the Distinguished Alumni concert Wednesday, Nov. 06, at 7:00 p.m. in the Administration Building Auditorium, the Alumni Challenge Golf Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 09 at 7:00 a.m. at the Joseph Bartholomew Sr. Municipal Golf Course; and the Xavier Gold Rush basketball game vs. LeMoyne-Owen and women’s volleyball game vs. Dillard, also scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 09, at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively, in the Convocation Center.

The theme of the 2019 celebration is “Celebrate Good Times … Come Home” and the graduating classes ending in “4” and “9” will be celebrating their respective class reunions. Alumni from all classes from around the country are expected to return to campus in large numbers.
