The Honorable Ivan L. R. Lemelle, a 1971 graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, a member of the University's Board of Trustees, and a senior judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, was honored Thursday with the unveiling of his official judicial portrait at the federal courthouse in New Orleans. The milestone comes as Lemelle prepares to receive one of the nation's highest honors for judicial mentorship and leadership—the 2026 American Inns of Court A. Sherman Christensen Award, which will be presented this fall at the Supreme Court of the United States.

The portrait ceremony celebrated Judge Lemelle's distinguished legal career and decades of service on the federal bench, bringing together members of the judiciary, elected officials, former law clerks, family, colleagues and friends to recognize his lasting contributions to the legal profession and public service.

Among those participating in the ceremony were Chief U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter; U.S. Rep. Troy A. Carter Sr. (’86); U.S. Circuit Judge Dana M. Douglas; Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Dean Madeleine M. Landrieu; U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson; and members of the Lemelle family. The program concluded with the unveiling of Judge Lemelle's portrait, followed by his reflections on the meaning behind the honor.

"Judge Ivan Lemelle has spent a lifetime demonstrating the values that define a Xavier education, including leadership, service, excellence and an unwavering commitment to justice," said Reynold Verret, president of Xavier University of Louisiana. "As a distinguished alumnus and valued member of our Board of Trustees, he continues to inspire our students and our University community through his example. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition of a remarkable career."

During his remarks, Lemelle reflected on the significance of the portrait, noting that while it is not the first official image of him displayed in the courthouse, this one tells a more personal story.

"This portrait captures my love of family," Lemelle said.

He also recognized the work of artist Josh Rainer, whose portrait now becomes part of the court's permanent collection.

"Every portrait reveals just as much about the artist as it does the subject," Lemelle said, expressing his appreciation for Rainer's vision and craftsmanship.

The portrait, he explained, represents more than his judicial service. It reflects the people who shaped his life and career.

"The foundation represented in this portrait is my family. It captures, at least in my eyes, your love, your encouragement, your memories and your belief in me," he said.

Lemelle closed by expressing hope that future generations who visit the courthouse will view the portraits of those who have served with the same appreciation and respect that he has for the judges whose legacies line its halls.

The ceremony comes during a year of continued national recognition for Lemelle. Earlier this month, the American Inns of Court announced that he had been selected to receive the 2026 A. Sherman Christensen Award, recognizing distinguished, exceptional and significant leadership in advancing the organization's mission of professionalism, ethics, civility and excellence within the legal profession. The award will be presented during the American Inns of Court's Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States on Oct. 31.

A proud Xavier alumnus, Judge Lemelle has devoted his career to the pursuit of justice while remaining deeply connected to his alma mater. As a member of Xavier University's Board of Trustees, he continues to help guide the institution's mission of promoting a more just and humane society through education, leadership, and service. With his portrait now permanently displayed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Judge Lemelle's legacy will continue to inspire generations of lawyers, judges, and public servants who follow in his footsteps.
