Olivia Downey (’26) with her research mentor, Dr. Samrat Dutta
Xavier University of Louisiana is proud to celebrate Olivia Downey, a senior chemistry major and PREM scholar, who has been chosen as one of just six undergraduate students in the country to speak at the upcoming American Chemical Society (ACS) Presidential Symposium in Atlanta this spring.
Downey’s invitation to the symposium on the future of undergraduate research reflects her deep commitment to scientific discovery and her leadership in the lab. Under the mentorship of Associate Professor Dr. Samrat Dutta, she has advanced research that bridges foundational chemistry with real-world applications, demonstrating both technical skill and thoughtful insight.
Her selection spotlights Xavier's vibrant research culture, where students are encouraged to push boundaries and contribute meaningfully to their fields. Downey will share her journey and vision alongside fellow emerging leaders in chemistry, highlighting not only her own work but also the collaborative spirit that defines STEM training at Xavier.
As she prepares for this national stage, Downey’s achievement stands as an inspiring example of what motivated students can accomplish with rigorous academic work, strong mentorship, and a passion for discovery.
