Changemakers, legacy-builders and thought leaders: Xavier University of Louisiana Alums Shape Communities as Policymakers

Xavier University of Louisiana is profoundly known to produce scholars that have established successful careers. From doctors to policymakers, Xavierites are representative of how beneficial it is to receive a university education. Two esteemed Xavier alums, Royce Duplessis (‘04) and Troy Carter (‘86) showcase Xavier excellence through their efforts and goals to positively impact communities. Congressman Carter was recently sworn into office for his second term as U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s Second Congressional District. State Senator Duplessis was recently sworn in as Louisiana State Senator for District 5. The swearing-in ceremony for State Senator Duplessis was held on Xavier’s campus.

“This is about family, culture, history, and tradition. I see my work helping to build new traditions that uplift our youth, support women, strengthen families, improve our economy and help create a safe, healthy, and vibrant community,” said State Senator Duplessis during the ceremony.

Current Xavierites were invited to attend the ceremony to encourage scholars to pursue their dreams. They were able to hear directly from government officials about plans to better the community and their impactful roles in society.

In early 2023, Congressman Carter was officially sworn in as a United States Representative for Louisiana’s Second Congressional District, representing the people of Louisiana in the 118th Congress. He was also sworn into the Congressional Black Caucus.

“I am honored and grateful that the people of LA-02 have entrusted me with the responsibility of representing them in Congress for a second term. I look forward to continuing to work with community leaders, my fellow members of Congress and most importantly, my constituents to ensure their voices, concerns and lived experiences are uplifted,” said Congressman Carter. “Together, we must continue putting people over politics by working to lower costs, creating better-paying jobs and career opportunities, while making our communities safer. I am ready to work with all my colleagues to deliver for the American people.”

In 2022, Congressman Carter was instrumental in securing $2.5 million in funding supporting Xavier University of Louisiana’s development of a pre-health advising and STEM education center. Congressman Carter presented the $2.5 million check to Xavier University of Louisiana President Dr. Reynold Verret and other university administrators during a press conference on May 2.
