ROME, Ga. — Angela Charles-Alfred and Lailaa Bashir have given Xavier University of Louisiana its first-ever overall small-college title at the ITA Cup tennis championships.

Charles-Alfred, a junior from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, and Bashir, a freshman from Jackson, Miss., earned their second victory Sunday — 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 against Helena Jansen and Emelie Schwarte of Tyler (Texas) Junior College — in the women's doubles final.

Charles-Alfred and Bashir are 12-0 this semester and have won four doubles championships, two this weekend. They won the NAIA title Saturday.

"We made history today," 17th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said. "These two played so well today. They are by far the best doubles combo I've had in all my years coaching. Hats off to them for what they accomplished this weekend. WOW!"

The victory against the Tyler team qualified Charles-Alfred and Bashir for a berth in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif. There the XULA team will compete against qualifiers from NCAA Division I.
