Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Science participates in MSI Aspiring Leaders program

For nearly 100 years, Xavier University of Louisiana has been dedicated to increasing diversity across industries. Xavier’s commitment to hiring the most qualified faculty and staff and allowing all the same opportunities, no matter their race or creed, sets it apart in the realm of higher education, where traditional leadership structures often lack diversity and inclusivity. Dr. Richard Peters, Xavier’s associate dean in its College of Arts and Sciences and professor in the university’s Division of Business, stands as a beacon of positive change as a recently selected participant in the MSI Aspiring Leaders program.

“I am truly honored to be a part of the MSI Aspiring Leaders program,” said Dr. Peters. “The opportunity to contribute to the promotion of diversity and equity in higher education leadership is both inspiring and humbling.”

Founded and sponsored by the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI), the MSI Aspiring Leaders program, known for its comprehensive leadership forum and mentoring initiative, aims to address the glaring disparities in higher education leadership. With nearly 60% of university presidents over the age of 60 and a significant underrepresentation of women and people of color, programs like MSI are essential for fostering a more inclusive academic environment.

Central to the program is its emphasis on mentorship, pairing aspiring leaders with experienced university presidents. Dr. Peters spoke highly of his mentors, affectionately referring to them as devoted mentors for change.

“It has been instrumental in guiding me through this journey,” he shared. “Not only do they provide invaluable insights and knowledge, but they also offer personalized support to help me develop my skills and navigate the complexities of academic leadership.”

Dr. Peters says the MSI Aspiring Leaders program stands apart from similar programs because of its intentional focus on fostering diverse leadership.

"It’s that level of intentionality that I think is a very, very unique aspect of this program," he noted. “By coupling aspiring leaders with existing presidents and providing tailored support, the program creates a nurturing environment for professional growth and development.”

As Dr. Peters continues his journey with the MSI Aspiring Leaders program, he remains committed to championing diversity and inclusivity in higher education leadership. With his passion, dedication, and the support of programs like MSI, Dr. Peters is poised to significantly impact the future of academic leadership, paving the way for a more diverse and equitable educational landscape.
