Since 1925, when Xavier University of Louisiana was founded, it has accepted the sacred privilege and social responsibility of preparing well-qualified teachers for public and private elementary and secondary schools. The University continues to train future teachers who possess a deep sense of social and civic responsibility, who are liberally educated and who possess the philosophical principles, and the professional character essential to their vocation and career. The goal of the Division of Education and Counseling is the development of reflective professionals who are collaborative change agents toward a more just and humane society.

Counseling Student Handbook 2022
Multiple assessments are used in the Division to monitor candidate performance and improve operations and programs. The unit systematically collects and analyzes data at specific checkpoints through the Trac-DAT Assessment System.
The Division of Education and Counseling received reaccreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in April 2011. This signifies that the graduates have been prepared according to accepted national standards of excellence and that the programs meet high standards in areas including program design, delivery, and quality of faculty. Xavier was the first private college in Louisiana to receive this prestigious rating. NCATE is now known as the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Additionally, the Counseling program was accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) in 2015. The program was reviewed against high professional standards that assure the quality of its accountability system, its faculty, and its graduates.

Xavier’s President Receives Honorary Degree in Recognition of his Commitment to Elevating Education

In recognition of his contributions to education and social justice, Dr. Reynold Verret, President of Xavier University of Louisiana, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Portland during its 2024 undergraduate commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 5. President Verret took the helm of Xavier in 2015 after a unanimous election by the university’s Board of Trustees and is preparing to lead the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic institution into its next century of service following the celebration of its historic centennial in 2025. Since his election, President Verret has championed the university’s mission of promoting a more just and humane society through education, research, and service. The honorary degree bestowed by the University of Portland highlights President Verret’s remarkable dedication to fostering academic excellence and equity in higher education, particularly for underrepresented communities.

Xavier Welcomes Deborah H. Telman as Commencement Speaker for College of Pharmacy and Graduate Programs Ceremony

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, Xavier University of Louisiana will host a morning commencement ceremony for its College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Graduate Programs and College of Pharmacy (COP) Programs. On the cusp of celebrating its centennial in 2025, Xavier proudly welcomes Ms. Deborah H. Telman, J.D., as the keynote speaker for the 2025 graduates of the CAS Graduate Programs and COP during the university’s 97th commencement. Ms. Telman, a visionary advocate for health equity, currently serves as Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel with Gilead Sciences, Inc., a global bio-pharmacy company and a frequent partner of Xavier in initiatives to improve health outcomes for the underserved.
