Things to do in New Orleans

Transportation Options

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is an international airport owned by the city of New Orleans. It is located 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans. The airport's address is 900 Airline Drive in Kenner, Louisiana. Louis Armstrong International Airport is the primary commercial airport for the New Orleans metropolitan area and southeast Louisiana. The airport was formerly known as Moisant Field, and it is also known as Louis Armstrong International Airport and New Orleans International Airport.

Amtrak, the national rail operator, connects America in safer, greener and healthier ways. With 21,000 route miles in 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces, Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day to more than 500 destinations.

The Regional Transit Authority in New Orleans provides world-class multi-modal mobility services. With an ever-expanding network of buses, streetcars, ferries, and paratransit vehicles, anyone can choose transit to access employment, education, healthcare, and all the wonderfully unique music, food, and entertainment options that the city of New Orleans has to offer. With nearly 40 routes across modes, the various vehicles cover 14,000 miles each day.

Getting around New Orleans by streetcar is a great way to see the city. There are three different lines: St. Charles, Canal Street, and the Riverfront, each of which originates downtown but takes you to different parts of the city.

Ferry Riders that also ride on the RTA Buses and Streetcars can now buy an integrated pass on GoMobile along with several other pass and fare options.

Cabs and Taxis

Big on atmosphere and ambiance, New Orleans is actually a geographically small town, which makes most journeys by cab very affordable. A cross-town ride is typically under $20, and a safe, fast way to get from point A to point B if you're unsure of streetcar or bus stop locations along the way. You'll find taxis indispensable when navigating the city.

Whether you’re headed to the French Quarter, MidCity, or to MSY, the Uber app connects you with a reliable ride — from low-cost to premium — in minutes. One tap and a car comes directly to you. Your driver knows exactly where to go. And payment is completely cashless.

The Lyft app matches you with friendly local drivers at the tap of a button. Just request and go. After the ride, simply pay through your phone.

Bike Share

The City of New Orleans, in partnership with Social Bicycles, Inc (SoBi), is preparing to launch bike share, a new and affordable transportation system for residents to move through the city. The bike share program will launch in Fall 2017.

Bike share is a fun, healthy, and convenient transit option that is already operating in many major cities across the country and around the globe. Bike share technology offers online and on-the-spot opportunities to reserve and rent a bike that will take you where you need to go. At the end of a journey, just drop it off at the nearest bike share station. You can pick up another when you need it next. Bike share is growing rapidly worldwide as a popular and fun transit system. It has been shown to encourage people to drive less, support local business, improve street safety, increase personal health, and enjoy the community more. The goal is to provide a seamless, sustainable, and affordable mode of transportation. It is designed to serve all residents, improve neighborhood quality of life, and provide year-round, equitable access to worksites and destinations.
