Transfer of Credits

Frequently Asked Questions Concerning the Transfer of Credits to Xavier University of Louisiana in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

What courses from another institution will Xavier accept for transfer?

Xavier will accept degree-credit academic courses from any institution accredited by one of the regional accrediting boards of the Commission on Colleges.  Courses proposed for transfer to Xavier will be evaluated to determine if they are equivalent to Xavier courses and/or satisfy the core.  Courses that do not meet these criteria will be accepted as electives.  College of Arts and Sciences departments and the College of Pharmacy can determine if these accepted electives satisfy their academic major and/or minor requirements.

I did not get prior written approval for the courses I am taking at another institution.  Will Xavier give me transfer credit for these courses?

Yes.  The requirement for prior approval has been waived at this time.

I am a freshman.  Will I be allowed to transfer course credits taken at another institution?

Yes.  The requirement that students must be at the sophomore level or higher has been waived at this time.

I don’t have a 2.0 grade point average. Will I be allowed to transfer course credits taken at another institution?

Yes.  The requirement of a minimum grade point average of 2.0 has been waived at this time.

Can I transfer courses taken at a junior college or community college?

Yes, but courses transferred to Xavier from a junior college or community college must be academic courses (courses that apply toward an academic degree) and can only be accepted as 1000 or 2000-level courses.

Will I be allowed to transfer more than 9 semester credit hours?

Yes.  The requirement to limit the number of transferred hours in a calendar year has been waived at this time.

I’m a transfer student.  Will Xavier accept my additional transfer credits?

Yes.

I earned a “D” in a course at another institution.  Can I receive transfer credit for this course?

No.  Only courses in which you have earned a grade of “C” or better are eligible for transfer.

What do I need to do when I return to Xavier to have my courses taken at another institution transferred?

You are responsible for assuring that an official transcript of any credits earned at another institution is sent to the Registrar at Xavier.  In addition, College of Pharmacy students must submit copies of the course descriptions and course syllabi to the COP.  It is not necessary for College of Arts and Sciences students to submit course descriptions and course syllabi for the courses they completed at another institution, however it is recommended that students maintain these documents in the event they are needed.

Will the grades I earn in courses taken at another institution be factored into my Xavier grade point average (GPA)?

No.  Only grades from Xavier courses are factored into the Xavier grade point average.  This should not affect students applying to professional and graduate schools (including the College of Pharmacy) since you must submit transcripts and report all grades for all courses taken to these institutions.

Are there any courses at other institutions that Xavier will NOT accept for transfer?

Yes.  Non-academic courses (i.e., interior decorating, automobile mechanics, etc.) and courses from non-accredited schools will not be accepted for transfer.

Will Xavier accept online courses for transfer?

Yes if the courses are taken through a regionally accredited institution and they fit the students’ programs of study at Xavier.

I am enrolled in a research internship.  Will Xavier accept for transfer credits from an internship or cooperative education (co-op)?

Students who were engaged in an internship or co-op at this time will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Will courses taken at another institution satisfy the undergraduate residency requirements?

Yes.
