Department of Sociology TRIBUTE TO: MS. JUSTINE GUENO, M.A. INSTRUCTOR, DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA Ms. Justine Gueno, M.A., was an instructor in the Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana for four years. In that time, Justine endeared herself to her colleagues and students in the Department of Sociology, and the entire XULA community. Justine, a native of New Orleans, LA, was born in 1963. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1981. In 1987, she received the Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Drama and Communications from the University of New Orleans. In 1997, she earned the Master of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of New Orleans. Justine taught Introduction to Sociology regularly in her appointment here, and taught a section of the Medical Sociology course one semester. Her excitement about sociology was contagious! A number of current sociology majors and program minors, and recent graduates of our major and minor programs of study were recruited into the Department through Justine’s efforts. Her research and teaching interests were: Environmental Injustice, Status Inconsistency and Health, Ethics in the Medical Profession, 21st Century Learning Communities and Distance Learning, Educational Equity for Minority Women, Paired Curriculum/Developmental Education/Transitional Year Programs, and Program Evaluation.Justine worked as a consultant on the topic of community and educational program evaluation. She also conducted research on a number of issues, including: program development in higher education, and health and medical ethics. Justine was a member of the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Society, and the American Evaluation Association. She was an advisory committee member for the Recovery in Motion Newsletter. She worked as an evaluation consultant for community and educational programs. She was active in volunteer efforts for various community organizations involving mentoring and raising social awareness. She guest lectured and facilitated workshops on critical thinking skills, environmental perspectives, medical sociology, and understanding social theory, at local universities and colleges. Ms. Gueno believed that, “Understanding social structure is key to negotiating society!” Aside from her having been a member of the faculty here at XULA, Ms. Gueno held past appointments as an Instructor at Delgado Community College, Dillard University, and the University of New Orleans. Ms. Gueno was a woman of great character, intelligence, diligence, patience, and fortitude. She brought an energy of sincere celebration to practically any situation. Whether it was as an advisor to her sons’ Cub Scout Troop, or as a fan of science fiction (especially Star Trek and the X-Files), Justine’s goodness shone through. Her smile and laugh could ease most troubles. Ms. Justine Gueno, a loving wife, an adoring mother, a devoted daughter, a supportive sister, a boon companion, and dedicated teacher passed away in April 2004. We will miss her greatly! Earth’s loss is Heaven’s gain! In her memory, the Outstanding Senior Award of the Department of Sociology at XULA will be known as THE JUSTINE GUENO AWARD.
