Dr. L. Faye Grimsley Dear Students and Colleagues:
Public health impacts all of our lives. It addresses a range of issues concerning the control of infectious diseases and outbreaks, protecting the air we breathe, ensuring access to safe food and drinking water, promoting healthy lifestyles, improving mental health, responding to natural disasters, and preventing chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Public health is constantly evolving, which presents new challenges for living a long, quality life. Although there are practical solutions to defeat some of these challenges in place, we still need state-of-the-art and community-based solutions to address lingering challenges such as tobacco use and addictions. Our students are exposed to courses and field experiences designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills essential to leading the efforts of improving the health of communities here and around the globe. Faculty members in the Department of Public Health Sciences are committed to training students and empowering them to be strong advocates for minimizing population based diseases and health disparities.
I am honored to be the Head of the Department of Public Health Sciences. The major here at Xavier is one of the few programs to combine a liberal arts curriculum with public health courses that stimulate critical thinking and emphasize the application of multidisciplinary strategies to promote health and wellbeing across the community.
Over the years, my public health career has been very rewarding and fulfilling, and I look forward to guiding and assisting others who have a desire to work in public health. I am looking forward to working with students, staff, and faculty to ensure Xavier’s undergraduate program in Public Health Sciences continues to be successful.
If you have an interest in promoting change and having a positive impact upon society’s well-being, I invite you to join the Department of Public Health Sciences. A Public Health Sciences degree will open doors to public health careers.
