Spring 2005 Workshop Participants
The SEMEP Office in the Physics and Dual Degree Engineering Department at Xavier University of Louisiana offers an eight-week STEM Saturday Workshop Series for in-service teachers. Facilitated by experienced STEM faculty, the Workshop Series is supported by the HBCU UP grant through the National Science Foundation . The Program is free to teachers who teach science or mathematics.
The Saturday Workshops Series is designed to introduce middle and high school science and mathematics teachers to the "activity-based" approach for teaching science and math concepts. The development of fundamental concepts and reasoning skill is emphasized. The hands-on inquiry-oriented method of instruction is used to help prepare teachers to teach science as a process of inquiry. The course meets the needs of teachers with varying levels of preparation in science and mathematics.

Screening of applications for the spring Workshop Series will begin August 15.
Cost/Stipend:
The STEM Saturday Workshop Series is tuition-free. A stipend of $500 is offered upon completion of the Workshop Series
Transportation and meals are the responsibility of the participant.
Requirements:
The STEM Saturday Workshop Series is open to full-time practicing teachers, grades K-12, with and emphasis on grades 8-12.
The STEM Saturday Workshop Series is a full-time, eight-week commitment. Classes meet from 8 am to 12 noon on consecutive Saturdays. Attendance is required during class hours.
