Xavier's Biomedical Honor Corps
Xavier's Biomedical Honor Corps is an organization specifically designed to provide assistance to freshmen interested in careers as physicians, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists, podiatrists, or public health/health care administration. The following provides more detail about the organization.
Purpose: To increase the number of under-represented minorities, especially African-Americans, who gain entry into medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, podiatry schools or into biomedical science graduate programs and who receive degrees from those schools.
Services provided: Students in the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Corps are closely monitored and provided advice, assistance, and motivational activities designed to complement the support provided by academic advisers. Activities for the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Corps include the following:
- Seminars by minority individuals who are health professions students or already have M.D., D.D.S., and similar degrees;
- Systematic exposure to mainline health professions and graduate programs beginning the first week of the freshman year in college;
- Step-by-step assistance in preparing applications for graduate and health professions schools (via a series of handouts available in XU's premedical Office);
- Guidance in preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test, the Dental Admissions Test, and similar health professions admisions tests;
- Assistance in finding summer jobs and/or positions in programs which enhance one's chances of succeeding in the biomedical sciences;
- Assistance in writing a career essay, preparing a curriculum vitae, etc. as well as integration of activities into regular courses in biology and chemistry (for instance, vocabulary-building, special modules dealing with algebra skills, how to write a definition, etc.);
- Careful monitoring with systematic feedback as a student progresses through the educational pipeline.
Who is eligible to participate: New freshmen at Xavier must have an ACT composite of 20 or above (combined SAT of 930 or above) and a high school grade point average of 3.0 or above in core content courses (mathematics, sciences, English,and social sciences). Students already enrolled at Xavier must have an XU GPA of 2.75 or above. All must have an interest in one of the health professions served by the program. An Associate Program is available for new freshmen who have potential and interest in the biomedical sciences but do not meet the grade/ACT requirement upon entering Xavier. Note: This is a freshman-year organization. Students with sophomore or higher classification are not eligible to join.
Dates of the program: Activities for the Biomedical Honor Corps are conducted from August-April yearly during a student's freshman year at Xavier. The Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Corps is NOT a summer program.
Cost of participation: There is currently no cost for participation in the program because funding is provided by a grant from the Howard Hughes Biomedical Institute.
Scholarships: Xavier's Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Corps is not a scholarship program. That is, participants receive no funds from the program. Students interested in scholarships to attend Xavier should contact the Admissions Office directly at (504) 520-7388.
When acceptances are announced: High school students who have been accepted to enter Xavier the following fall semester are accepted on a rolling basis from September 15 through May 1 until all positions are filled. Student who are not accepted as entering freshmen may join the Honor Corps in the spring semester of their freshman year if grades earned at Xavier are acceptable.
