What is Allied Health? Allied Health is the general term used to describe a number of professions vital to the delivery of health or health related services. Allied Health professionals are involved in the identification, evaluation, and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; rehabilition and health systems management, among others.
What do Allied Health Professionals Do? There are many health related occupations that are referred to as "Allied Health" Professions. Some of the more familiar include dental hygienists, dietitians, medical technologists, speech pathologists, respiratory therapists, emergency medical technicians-paramedics, surgical technicians, and physical therapists.
Is There a Need for Allied Health Professionals? Yes!! If you don't believe it, pay close attention the next time you are in a hospital or during your next visit to the dentist or optometrist. The individuals who take X-Rays, perform various tests on blood and urine, administer respiratory care, fit you for corrective eyewear, or clean your teeth, are all allied health professionals. Physicians, dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and other main-line health professionals rely heavily on the services of allied health professionals for the overall deliverance and maintenance of patient care.
