DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, COMPUTER SCIENCE & DUAL DEGREE ENGINEERING PROGRAM (DDEP)

Physics

The Department of Physics and Computer Science is among the top in the nation for awarding African Americans baccalaureate degrees in physics and the physical sciences. The Department is making strides to explore opportunities as a research oriented department that will ensure hands-on development of the concepts in physics and engineering.

Physics students can pursue one of these three degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
  • Dual Degree in Engineering (B.S. or B.A.)

MISSION:

The Physics Program at XULA holds the success and development of its students as its highest priority. Instilling our students with an academic proficiency in physics, we foster within them an appreciation of how the natural world works. A unique and supportive learning environment, in addition to high expectations— our department places a strong emphasis on enhancing student knowledge and skill through research. Seeking to promote the understanding and awareness of the myriad of opportunities available from an education in physics, our department conducts regular outreach initiatives.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES:

  •  Provide a strong conceptual understanding of physics principles for our students
  •  Foster critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning
  •  Develop the ability to apply the scientific method when conducting research
  •  Instill a foundation of research, computational, technical, and statistical skills
  •  Produce students with effective communication and strategic abilities
  • Inspire students with motivation for a lifelong pursuit of learning and professional excellence
