Action Plan for Student Services
I. Student Services Staff Responsibility to Educate Students on the H1N1 Virus and Preventive Measures
- At upcoming residence hall meetings and September SGA retreat and student class/organization meetings, staff will share with students information provided by Health Services on the H1N1 virus, encouraging students to reduce their risk of exposure by washing hands frequently, using antibacterials, and appropriate coughing and sneezing techniques.
- Promote the use of antibacterials and/or washing of hands upon entering or exiting buildings; at campus workout areas; residence hall computer labs; and all other public access areas in University Center, Fitness Center/areas, Gymnasium, Auditoriums, offices, etc.
- Encourage students to limit contact with individuals with flu-like symptoms or who have been diagnosed with H1N1 virus.
II. Student Services Staff Recommendations for Students Appearing to Experiencing Flu-like Symptoms or Diagnosed with H1N1 flu:
- At department offices or events – Encourage students with visible symptoms to see their personal physician or report to Student Health Services immediately.
Resident Students –All resident students experiencing flu like symptoms should report to the Office of Health Services.
- Encourage students, in consultation with physician or Student Health staff, to remain isolated from campus for 5-7 days or at least 24 hours after fever subsides without the aid of medication.
Resident Students - also see Health Services and University Police plans and recommendations in this document. At the recommendation of the Office of Student Health Services, students will have the option to move to a private room but will be strongly encouraged to return home for care if the residence is within two driving hours of the University.
If remaining on campus, ill students will be isolated in assigned “sick” rooms and receive all meals. They must remain isolated until 24 hours after fever-free without the use of medication. The students will be provided with surgical masks.
- Encourage and assist students in contacting faculty and to remain engaged in instruction through blackboard, email, etc.
III. Student Services Recommendations for Cancellation/Postponement of Events:
In consultation with university administrators---
- Some events/activities that pose greater threat or risk of exposure may require modification, postponement or cancellation.
- Lack of adequate staffing due to personal or family care may require modification, postponement or cancellation of activities/events.
These guidelines are in keeping with the CDC Guidance for Responses to Influenza for Institutions of Higher Education (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/institutions/guidance/)
