Action Plan for XU Faculty

OFFICE OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

I. PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO BE TAKEN BY XAVIER FACULTY REGARDING PERSONAL CARE AND CARE OF IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS:

Through information provided by Xavier University, each faculty member will:

  1. Develop an understanding of the H1N1 virus, its symptoms and potential effects;
  2. Learn and use preventive measures to reduce the risk of contracting the H1N1 virus including washing of hands, using antibacterials to clean surfaces in areas with high traffic, appropriate sneezing and coughing techniques, etc.;
  3. Limit exposure to individuals with flu-like symptoms or who have been diagnosed with H1N1 virus;
  4. Prepare plans for class coverage in the event that faculty members or their immediate family members become ill with flu and must be quarantined at home;
  5. Submit plans to respective department/division chair;
  6. Remain current on H1N1 virus and its impact on Xavier community through regular updates provided by the Office of Media Relations.

II. INTERVENTIVE MEASURES TO BE TAKEN BY XAVIER FACULTY OR IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBER(S) IN HOUSEHOLDS EXPERIENCING FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS OR DIAGNOSED WITH H1N1 FLU:

  1. Arrange to see a physician immediately and begin treatment;
  2. Contact department/division chair and/or respective academic dean to provide notice of personal illness or that of immediate family member(s) with flu;
  3. Remain away from campus for at least 24 hours after fever has subsided without medication or until the time in which the physician provides a return-to-work release; if you cannot obtain a return-to-work release from your physician, then you should contact Xavier’s Office of Student Health Services
  4. Implement plan for class coverage in consultation with the department/division chair.

III. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ON THE H1N1 VIRUS AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

  1. At the beginning of one class period within the next week, share with each class information provided by the Office of Academic Affairs on the H1N1 virus. This information will describe the virus, its symptoms and potential effects, and measures to reduce the risk of contracting the H1N1 virus including washing of hands, using antibacterials to clean surfaces in areas with high traffic, appropriate sneezing and coughing techniques, etc.;
  2. Encourage students throughout the semester to either wash hands or use antibacterials when entering and exiting each building on campus.  This is good opportunity to notify students of antibacterial dispensers located in each academic building at Xavier;
  3. Encourage students to limit contact with individuals with flu-like symptoms or who have been diagnosed with H1N1 virus.

IV. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FACULTY WITH STUDENTS EXPERIENCING FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS OR DIAGNOSED WITH H1N1 FLU:

  1. Strongly encourage students to see their personal physician or to report to the University clinic immediately;
  2. Encourage students, in consultation with a medical official, to remain isolated from the Xavier campus (preferably at home) for at least 24 hours after fever has subsided without medication;
  3. Encourage students to immediately notify the University nurse, the department/division chair and/or the academic dean of his/her flu illness and the need to be excused from class for at least 24 hours after fever has subsided without medication as stipulated by a medical official;
  4. Notify students of ways in which they can remain engaged in class daily or submit work while in isolation either through Blackboard, e-mail or some other alternate delivery method determined by the respective faculty members; if a student does not have technology access, then non-technology-based arrangements should be made to engage the student.
