The Department of Music is the center of cultural activity in the College of Arts and Sciences here at Xavier University of Louisiana. Special programs range from participating in or attending the Opera Workshop to being an audience member or student musician in the University Jazz Festival. Through opportunities designed for the music major, you can study and develop your talents and skills to become the consummate professional. The faculty takes pride in offering a quality one-on-one experience for all of our students to appreciate. We know our students by monitoring their academic progress as well as their personal growth and development as musicians and musicologists. The Department of Music is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, which has characterized our department as having a “close, family-like atmosphere where the students get the full attention of the faculty”.
The department offers two degrees in three academic programs. An incoming freshman might pursue a Liberal Arts Degree in Music (any instrument or voice) with a Minor in another discipline (such as Business or Computer Science) or one might be interested in the Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Performance or Music Education. Recent Xavier Graduates from these programs are pursuing graduate degrees from schools all over the country, going to professional school for further preparation in careers in Music Technology and/or the Business of Music, working in high schools, middle and elementary schools and performing in a variety of musical media.
The Xavier University of Louisiana campus is located in the Central City, University District of New Orleans. Student Services along with the City of New Orleans itself provide numerous activities that support a well-rounded college experience.
If you know someone, or if you are making a decision about attending higher education, the Department of Music has an extensive Music Talent Scholarship Program for the Music Major. Scholarship Awards are considered by audition only (in person or by video/audio recording). Be a part of the grand musical contribution that the department makes to the Xavier community and to the world.
