Xavier University Symphonic Band

The Xavier University Symphonic Band is a unique concert ensemble comprised of some of the finest musicians in the country and abroad. The Symphonic Band performs in concert annually each semester and many of its members enroll at Xavier from some of the country’s strongest high school music programs. The group performs various repertoire ranging from traditional orchestral transcriptions to contemporary symphonic literature, the classic march, and standard concert band repertoire. Great emphasis is placed on providing an educational account of the historical development of American music that will serve to inspire audiences to appreciate and understand the contribution that American music has given the world of music.
Xavier University Jazz Ensemble

The Xavier University Jazz Ensemble is a featured group at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and has toured the United States and other South American countries quite frequently. The Jazz Ensemble performs in concert annually each semester and hosts the university’s Jazz Festival each spring. Many of its members enroll at Xavier from some of the country’s finest high school Jazz programs. The group performs various repertoire ranging from contemporary jazz ensemble literature to jazz orchestra, big band swing, be-bop, neo-bop, jazz-rock, and popular music. Great emphasis is placed on providing an educational account of the historical development of Jazz that will serve to inspire audiences to appreciate and understand the contribution that Jazz has given the world of music.
Xavier University University Chorus

The Xavier University Chorus is a large choral ensemble open to all members of the Xavier Community. In the year 2000, combined with the Concert Choir this group produced the CC “My Beloved to Me” in honor of Xavier’s founder, St. Katharine Drexel and traveled to Rome, Italy to perform for her Canonization and events surrounding the Canonization. The University Chorus maintains a rigorous performance schedule of larger choral works with orchestra and performs annual concerts at the university and abroad each semester.
Xavier University Concert Choir

The Xavier University Concert Choir is the select choral organization which performs a variety of music that is suitable for chamber ensemble. This group forms the core of the Xavier University Chorus and is noted for its distinctive concert performances. These include biannual concert presentations which have traditionally included performances for Xavier Alumni during Homecoming, performances for local organizations such as the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center, and a series of Vesper Services in anticipation of the Canonization of St. Katharine Drexel. As a “select” group, Concert Choir members are required to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism in the preparation and presentation of its repertoire as musical ambassadors for the university.
Xavier University Opera Workshop

The Opera Workshop provides instruction in the staging of operatic literature for students at Xavier. Opera Workshop continues a long history of opera performance that was begun in 1934 by Sr. Elise Sisson (Sister of the Blessed Sacrament). Xavier University was the first HBCU to present full-scale opera productions under Sr. Elise’s leadership. While the workshop performs shorter operas and scenes each semester, full-scale staged works are performed each spring semester.
Xavier University String Ensemble

The Xavier University String Ensemble consists of music and non-music majors dedicated to bringing the finest string repertoire for various chamber ensemble settings to Xavier’s campus. This chamber group provides a performing ensemble for the string music majors and those students who are talented and interested in performing on their orchestral stringed instrument. The String Ensemble performs annually each semester at the university and many of the members participate in the Xavier University Jazz Orchestra.
