A summer and school year professional development program designed to:
+ Promote high student achievement in and enthusiasm for
mathematics by supporting 4th – 8th grade math teachers
through developing their skills in curriculum design,
instruction, and formative assessment.
+ Ensure the achievement of students significantly below
their expected level in math by providing their teachers with the necessary resources and skills.
+ Develop a guild of math teachers in New Orleans who are committed: to each other’s development, to sharing resources and effective practice, and to forging a professional community of math teachers in our city.
Program Leaders/Designers
Xavier Math Fellows Program is designed and delivered by leading
local, national, and international mathematics teachers and
educators, including:
+ Cynthia Costello, former math department chair of New Orleans
Charter Middle School, the first charter school in New Orleans
and a school that closed the achievement gap in mathematics
+ Members of the Math Solutions team, founded by Marilyn Burns, one of the leading mathematics educators in the
United States.
+ Lynn Churchman, a leading mathematics educator from
Great Britain, where she advises on national math strategy and
is the Mathematics Director for ARK Schools.
+ Staff from Uncommon Schools, one of the leading charter
school networks in the United States, with several non-selective
schools in New York City,
Newark, Boston, and
Rochester that have
demonstrated outstanding student achievement
in mathematics.
