Herb Douglas, the only surviving member of the 1942 Xavier relay team (the first HBCU school to win a race at the Penn Relays); XU President Dr. Norman Francis; Ralph Metcalfe Jr., son of the late Ralph Metcalfe, the XU coach who assembled that team; and Joseph Cosgrove, President and CEO of event sponsor Pentec Health Inc., pose for publicity photos at the 116th running of the prestigious Philadelphia PA track meet. The 2010 4x100 relay was named the Ralph Metcalfe Centennial.

COCA COLA WINNERS

XU students Theresa Scales and Steve Morgan (fourth and fifth from left, respectively), winners of the Coca-Cola Open Happiness Tour Contest, pose with (from left) company marketing rep Tyrone Rousell, XU’s Marian Minnard, and company marketing rep Adrienne Johnson and account rep Calvin Segura. The students will join actor Idris Elba on an all-expense paid trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the company’s water conservation project RAIN (Replenish Africa Initiative) and attend a World Cup Soccer event.

smiley KATRINA - 5 YEARS LATER

National media personality and social commentator Tavis Smiley (at left, facing away from the Xavier sign on Drexel Street), was on campus recently to interview XU President Norman Francis for a special documentary he is filming which focuses on the rebuilding efforts in the New Orleans area five years after Hurricane Katrina.

cop QATAR PAVILION

With the outside structure pretty much completed, construction of the interior of the College of Pharmacy’s new Qatar Pavilion expansion continues at a steady pace through the early summer months. Partial occupancy of the building is expected in early fall, with the official ribbon-cutting scheduled for October.
