President Norman Francis is all smiles as he accepts a $375,000 check representing the first installment of a half million dollar committment from the John Stroger Foundation from Yonnie Lynn Stroger ( the daughter of alumnus John '52 and Yonnie Stroger); Nicholas Melas, President of the Stroger Foundation; and Fred Carter '69, President of the Xavier National Alumni Association. The presentation was made during the annual Chicago Brunch Cruise on Lake Michigan.

HHMI VISIT
Howard Hughes Medical Institute representatives Patricia Soochan and Mary Bonds are greeted by XU faculty and staff – Dr. Norman Francis, Dr. Elizabeth Barron, Dr. Mack Crayton III, Dr. Kenneth Boutte, Dr. JW Carmichael and Dr. Diedre Labat. The HHMI duo were on campus to see equipment the Institute replaced after Hurricane Katrina, as well as to visit with faculty and students who have benefitted from other HHMI initiatives.
