MISSION:  The Serials department mission is to acquire, manage, and provide timely and accurate access of materials to the Xavier University Library serials collections in all formats. The Serial department is responsible for cataloging and processing periodicals in all languages, formats and subject areas, including print, micro formats, and electronic formats. Along with these responsibilities, the Serial department staff also collect and bind periodical volumes through the year, and data entry for serial holdings. The serials unit centrally manages, either directly or indirectly, all aspects of serials at Xavier University Library.

 

WHAT ARE SERIALS?

Serials are any materials published and received on a continuing basis such as:

Journals, periodicals, newspapers, newsletters

Microforms

Conference proceedings

Databases

Electronic journals

Government documents

Law and loose-leaf publications

Monographic series

Music series

Reference materials, abstracts, indexes

DO SERIALS CIRCULATE?

Most serials do not circulate. However there are some exceptions: monographic and music series and annual publications located in the library collections. Serials are sent to the bindery every month and completed shipments are returned. Newly bound volumes are on the shelf within 2 days of return.
