                 Mary George, Head of Metadata Management


                The mission of the Metadata Department is two-fold, including the cataloging and processing of all books and monographs, and the
                collection, binding, and cataloging of periodicals.

            Metadata Department

                The responsibility of the Metadata Department is to maximize access to all library resources through quality cataloging, catalog maintenance,
                adherence to national standards, and meeting special requirements for local needs. The goal of this staff is to enable Library patronsto easily
                locate information through the creation of effective, accurate catalog records for each title in the collection. As part of a year-round activity,
                metadata staff organize and maintain records for information resources in all formats, including print resources, audiovisual materials, and
                electronic books. Once cataloged, staff routinely process materials for the shelf and send them to the stacks in the timeliest manner possible.

                Among the tools used by Metadata staff to perform cataloging responsibilities are:

                 VIRTUA (Virginia Tech Library System ILS)
                 AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules)
                 RDA (Resource Description and Access)
                 LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings)
                 DDC (Dewey Decimal System)
                 LCRI (Library of Congress Rules Interpretations)
