The Interlibrary Loan Service is intended to provide members of the Xavier University student body, faculty, and staff with access to library materials not in the Xavier University Library. Through this service, the Library is able to obtain materials from most libraries in North America and in several areas of the world. Some libraries may agree to lend dissertations and audiovisual materials. However, in most cases, books and photocopied materials can be obtained with more ease.
If the materials needed for your research are not owned by the Xavier Library or one of the other local libraries, fill out the on-line Interlibrary Loan Request form, or on the third floor of the Library Resource Center at the ILL service desk in room 320 between 7:30AM and 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday. No more than five (5) active requests per patron per day will be accommodated by the Interlibrary Loan Department. In order to conserve time and resources; we request that all users of ILL services and holders of LALINC/CALL Cards please refrain from requesting interlibrary loans material held in the local member libraries. Please inquire at the reference desk on the first (1) floor about how to obtain the LALINC /CALL Card.
The lending library, that is, the library supplying the needed materials to us, will determine how long the book can be kept. It may also place certain restrictions on where the material can be used. For example, if it is a rare book, the lending library may request that the material be used only inside the library.

Photocopies of articles from periodicals may require a fee. These copies become the personal property of individual making the request.
Libraries may charge when they lend out materials. Library patrons requesting interlibrary loans are required to indicate the maximum amount they will be willing to pay should the lending library require payment for the transaction.
Please allow at least two (2) weeks for your materials to arrive.
Please complete the entire ILL Loan Request form. This ensures that the Library has sufficient information to process your request. If the request is for a book, be sure to provide the author’s full name, the title, edition, place and date of publication, and ISBN. For photocopies, give the full name of the periodical, the volume, issue, date and page of the article. Also include the author (s) of the article, the article title, and the ISSN. Indicate the source of the reference so that the library can verify the citations you provided when necessary.

When requested materials arrive, the library patron will be contact by phone or e-mail. Books not picked up after one week will be returned to the lending library. When charges are involved, the person requesting the material will still be charged.
It is the responsibility of the patron requesting an interlibrary loan to return the borrowed material to the Interlibrary Loan service desk on Third Floor. The Library will not be responsible for any loaned books returned to any other person in the Library. At the discretion of the lending library, borrowed materials can be renewed. Request for renewals should be made at least three (3) days before the due date. Renewal request can be made in person or by telephone at 520-5056.
Library patrons are responsible for all library fines resulting from keeping the loaned material beyond the due date. The fine for ILL material is $1.00 a day.
Xavier University Library will not honor requests for materials already in its own collection. It will, however, process requests for copies of items missing from its collections, so long as the items are not found at other local libraries.
Xavier students (undergraduate as well as graduate) and faculty and staff can borrow books from Loyola University Library, using a validated Xavier ID.
Xavier graduate students and faculty and staff members can obtain LALINC/CALL Cards to borrow books from Delgado Community College, Dillard University, Nunez Community College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Notre Dame Seminary, Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Southern University at New Orleans, Tulane University, and the University of New Orleans. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a coping order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of a copyright law.
