The responsibility of the Cataloging Department is to maximize access to all library resources through quality cataloging, catalog maintenance, adherence to national standards, and meeting special requirements for local needs. The goal of this staff is to enable Library patrons to easily locate information through the creation of effective, accurate catalog records for each title in the collection. As part of a year-round activity, cataloging staff organize and maintain records for information resources in all formats, including print resources, audiovisual materials, and electronic books. Once cataloged, staff routinely process materials for the shelf and send them to the stacks in the timeliest manner possible.
Among the tools used by Technical Services staffs to perform cataloging responsibilities are:
* OCLC (Online Computer Library Catalog)
* VIRTUA (Virginia Tech Library System cataloging software)
* AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules)
* LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings)
* DDC (Dewey Decimal System)
* LCRI (Library of Congress Rules Interpretations)
