                Mostly videotape outtakes for a one-hour documentary about white backlash and the platform of David Duke in the early 1990s.

                Barès, Basil Jean Collection, 1866-1947, 0.4 linear feet.
                Barés is the only known composer to have a copyright for his sheet music illegally assigned to him while a slave. The collection consists of the
                only known unpublished sheet music by the composer, the only known photographs of Barès, and his actual signature. PDF of Holdings (223KB)

                By the leading black photographer of New Orleans in the first half of the twentieth century, including the last pictures taken of Marcus Garvey

                Mostly writings and collected items of a longtime professor of English and African-American history at Xavier University upon whom the school
                conferred an honorary doctorate.

                Cahn, Gladys Freeman. Papers, 1939-1963. 0.6 linear ft.
                Contains biographical information, speeches given by Cahn when she served as an officer of the National Urban League and the New Orleans Urban
                League, and records of the National Convention of the National Council of Jewish Women, which she served as National President (1955-1959).

                Typescripts and raw video for a show produced by WYES-TV, New Orleans, about the meaning of the word "Creole" in Louisiana.

                Desdunes Family New Orleans Crusader Clippings. Collection, 1891-1909. Ca. 1 linear ft.
                From the extremely rare newspaper founded by Louis Martinet in 1889 that later became the official organ of the group that brought the Plessy v.
                Ferguson case. The paper ceased publication in 1898. The collection contains a few other items.

                Dominican College, St. Mary’s, Records, 1910-2009, 120 linear ft.
                This collection includes Board of Directors Minutes, Administrative Minutes, Academic Department Records, Alumni Records, Yearbooks, and other
                university publications. Also included are scrapbooks and plaques commemorating and remembering the students, faculty, and achievements of the
                university. The attached inventory was prepared by the archivist at Dominican College in preparation for removal of the collection to Xavier

                Mostly antebellum records about slavery and free black people in Louisiana. Includes the poem "Liberty" by Frederick Douglass in his own hand.

                Chester Himes. Collection, ca. late 1930s-present. 0.6 linear ft.
                Original correspondence to and from the African-American social protest and crime fiction writer and related research materials. Compliments one of
                the world's most complete collections of publications by Himes.

                I've Known Rivers, Inc. Records, 1983-1984. ca. 2.4 linear ft.
                Mostly design materials (principally by Xavier professor John Scott, recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Award) and planning documents for
                the Afro-American Pavilion at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition in New Orleans.

                Clippings mainly from black-interest newspapers begun by the head of Xavier University's Negro History Department from 1933 to 1939 and then

                Personal papers of the Xavier alumnus and longtime head of Development at the University.

                Juvenile Co-Operators Fraternals Benevolent Mutual Aid Association Records, 1894-1969, 1.2 linear feet.
                Records include correspondence, journals, and minutes of the association, whose members encompassed the Third District of New Orleans and the

                Papers of author and political commentator William Maddox. Collection includes published and unpublished works and correspondence. Among

                 The collection consists of papers and collected items of John A. Pecoul, Jr., former Associate Vice- President for Development at Xavier University
                and former Special Assistant to New Orleans Mayor Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial.

                Roussève, Charles B. Papers, ca. 1920s-1970s. 25 linear ft.
                The bulk of the papers of the longtime black public school principal in New Orleans, who was the author of The Negro in Louisiana, the first attempt
                 at a black history for the state, published by Xavier University during the Great Depression. Complements a smaller holding at the Amistad Research
                Center at Tulane University.

                On the founders of Xavier University, who have missions among African Americans and Native Americans.

                Society of St. Joseph [Josephites]. Records, ca. 1888-present. 1.6 linear ft., 29 reels, and 101 CD-R's.
                Computer printouts, collected printed items, 29 reels of microfilm, and 101 CD-R's principally on black Catholic missions in the South.

                The integrally-kept archives of the former Young Men's Business Club, many of the officers of which became prominent civic leaders and politicians,
                including several mayors of New Orleans. Includes minutes of the Board of Directors (1919-1973), president's reports (1920-1941), a list of
                administrators (1919-1958), financial reports (1924-1955), financial statements and audits (1947-1976), photographs of presidents and board
                members (1924-1974), other photographs, account cards, application cards, the group’s annual Blue Book (1922-1978), and its periodical
                 Action (1923-1980).
