Services to the public:
Research assistance in person and by telephone, FAX, mail, and e-mail.
Photocopies can be made for patrons at a cost of five cents per sheet.
Patrons are not allowed to make their own photocopies from materials in the Archives.
Copy photographs can be provided of materials beyond copyright or for which the University holds the copyrights.
Service charge, exclusive of postage, for photocopies to be mailed: $1.50
Service charge for photographs to be made: $7.00.

Slide(s) (35mm positive color): $2.00 each.
Commercial use fee(s) (single use) for items to be published: $40.00 per image.
Costs of other types or sizes of photographs, for copies on computer diskette, and for other forms of reproduction are available on request.
All researchers wishing to publish images and requesting a waiver of commercial use fees must justify such a request to the satisfaction of the repository in writing and must agree to donate a copy of the publication to Xavier Archives. Waivers will be granted only for non-profit, scholarly, monographic publications, not for publications produced for the textbook market. Publication on the Internet or on Local Area Networks (LANs) lacking copy protection is under no circumstances permitted.

Xavier Archives collects unpublished and rare published items on four topics, the history of Xavier University of Louisiana, African-American history and culture, Roman Catholicism in the United States, and the Southern U. S. and the Gulf-Caribbean region, with special emphasis on the history of Louisiana and New Orleans. By June 30, 2008, the repository held 1,721.8 linear ft. of unpublished materials. The University records measured 1,324.6 linear ft., the manuscript special collections 397.2 linear ft. Xavier Archives also holds the University’s collection of non-circulating rare books and periodicals. The oldest monograph is Flavius Josephus’s De Antiquitate Judaica, published in 1486. The rarest is Les Cenelles [The Mayhaws], published in New Orleans in 1845, the first anthology of poetry by people of African descent in the U. S., which is held in OCLC (the Online Computer Library Center, which covers some 45,000 libraries in 84 countries) by only four libraries. African-American and Southern U. S. writers are especially well represented in Rare Books, and the repository is noted for having one of the most comprehensive collections of works by African-American protest and crime fiction writer Chester Himes, with most titles represented in every English-language edition and translation into foreign languages that has been published.

In addition to incorporating all of the public relations records of the University, including all of the old vertical files of press clippings and photographic files, the records of University and Media Relations also include the records of the Drexel Center for Continuing Learning. Of particular note are the materials generated by the Drexel Center when it produced a television documentary in the 1980s. A brief description follows:
A House Divided. Records, 1983-1987. Ca. 40 linear ft.
Correspondence, planning documents, and videotape of interviews of civil rights leaders and others recorded for the one-hour documentary about African Americans and race relations in New Orleans politics in the 1960s and '70s. Most of the material was not used in the documentary, and many of the interviewees are now deceased.
Others administrative subdivisions of the University represented in the University Archives are as follows: Admissions, Alumni Affairs, Board of Trustees, Bush Grant Office, Campus Ministries, Career Services, Center for Environmental Programs, Center for Intercultural and International Programs, Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Cooperative Education, Commission on Governance, Counseling and Wellness Center, Employees’ Federal Credit Union, Family Life Center, Financial Aid, Fiscal Affairs, Health Services, Human Resources, Humanities Endowment Committee, Information Technology Center, Placement, Registrar, Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Corporation of Louisiana Minutes, Magazine Street Convent Annals and Related Correspondence, Upward Bound, War Production Training Unit, Xavier Cluster, and Yearbook.
Among academic programs, the Division of Education and the Social Science Department have transferred the greatest volume of records. Other academic programs represented are as follows: African-American Studies, Art, Biology, Business and Economics, Chemistry, Communications, English, Graduate School, History, Languages, Mathematics, Medical Technology, Music, Pharmacy, Philosophy, Physics, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medicine, Psychology, and Sociology. Xavier Archives also holds records about athletics and student groups, including the Student Government Association, African-Americans with a Responsibility to Enlighten (AWARE), and the Beta Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

African Americans and the Roman Catholic Church. Collection, ca. 1920s-present. 5 linear ft.
Extensive collected items, which, along with other holdings, makes Xavier Archives one of the largest repositories anywhere on black American Catholics.
Backlash. Records, ca. late 1980s-present. 1.4 linear ft.
Mostly videotape outtakes for a one-hour documentary about white backlash and the platform of David Duke in the early 1990s.
Bedou, Arthur P. Photographs, 1900-1988. 0.8 linear ft.
By the leading black photographer of New Orleans in the first half of the twentieth century, including the last pictures taken of Marcus Garvey in the U. S. and extensive documentation of Booker T. Washington's last speaking tours.
Bouise, Oscar. Papers, ca. 1930s-present. 3.6 linear ft.
Mostly writings and collected items of a longtime professor of English and African-American history at Xavier University upon whom the school conferred an honorary doctorate.
Cahn, Gladys Freeman. Papers, 1939-1963. 0.6 linear ft.
Contains biographical information, speeches given by Cahn when she served as an officer of the National Urban League and the New Orleans Urban League, and records of the National Convention of the National Council of Jewish Women, which she served as National President (1955-1959).
The Creole Controversy. Records, 1989. 1 linear ft.
Typescripts and raw video for a show produced by WYES-TV, New Orleans, about the meaning of the word "Creole" in Louisiana.
Desdunes Family New Orleans Crusader Clippings. Collection, 1891-1909. Ca. 1 linear ft.
From the extremely rare newspaper founded by Louis Martinet in 1889 that later became the official organ of the group that brought the Plessy v. Ferguson case. The paper ceased publication in 1898. The collection contains a few other items.
Dominican College, St. Mary’s, Records, 1910-2009, 120 linear ft.
This collection includes Board of Directors Minutes, Administrative Minutes, Academic Department Records, Alumni Records, Yearbooks, and other university publications. Also included are scrapbooks and plaques commemorating and remembering the students, faculty, and achievements of the university. Mostly antebellum records about slavery and free black people in Louisiana. Includes the poem "Liberty" by Frederick Douglass in his own hand.

Original correspondence to and from the African-American social protest and crime fiction writer and related research materials. Compliments one of the world's most complete collections of publications by Himes.
I've Known Rivers, Inc. Records, 1983-1984. ca. 2.4 linear ft.
Mostly design materials (principally by Xavier professor John Scott, recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Award) and planning documents for the Afro-American Pavilion at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition in New Orleans.
Jackson, David Joseph, Press Clippings. Collection, 1927-1987. 4.8 linear ft.
Clippings mainly from black-interest newspapers begun by the head of Xavier University's Negro History Department from 1933 to 1939 and then continued by Library staff members.
Jupiter, Clarence. Papers, 1969-1997. 8.2 linear ft.
Personal papers of the Xavier alumnus and longtime head of Development at the University.

Roussève, Charles B. Papers, ca. 1920s-1970s. 25 linear ft.
The bulk of the papers of the longtime black public school principal in New Orleans, who was the author of The Negro in Louisiana, the first attempt at a black history for the state, published by Xavier University during the Great Depression. Complements a smaller holding at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University.

On the founders of Xavier University, who have missions among African Americans and Native Americans.
