MISSION : The mission of IMS is to facilitate and support instruction
by providing a clearinghouse for media services to faculty, staff
and students.
The Instructional Media Services Center’s primary means
for providing faculty support is through its four Technology-Enhanced-Instruction
rooms located on the fourth floor of the University
Library. The staff is striving to expand the capabilities of these
rooms in order to better meet the needs of Xavier University’s
faculty and students.
Also available is an individualized-learning carrel room where
students (or faculty) may view and/or listen to a variety of
media. The Center houses video and audio holdings for faculty
and student use. A wide variety of visual imagining equipment
is available for faculty check-out. The center also has a dedicated
staff to assist faculty in room and equipment reservations, room
set-up, equipment operation, instructional design, production
of visual images and audio, and many other services.
Policy for Faculty Use of Classrooms Administered by Instructional
Media Services: Procedure for Approval and Assignment
Facilities:
The Instructional Media Center currently has four rooms available for faculty
who require audiovisual or instructional technology support. These include:
400-F 26-seat seminar/audiovisual room
407-A 32-seat lecture/audiovisual room
417-A 30-seat lecture/audiovisual room
417-b 40-seat lecture/audiovisual room
A growing library of VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, and an older collection
of films, filmstrips, audiotapes and disc recordings support these
facilities.
Procedure for Scheduling:
Ad-hoc use of Instructional Media Services facilities is
allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. However, early scheduling
of rooms and equipment is encouraged. Ad-hoc users should make
their reservations using the online
reservation form. Instructional Media
Services reserves the right to refuse service if it cannot adequately
be prepared to deliver service (too little notice, too many bookings,
etc.).
Prior to the deadline for department chairs to submit course information to
the Dean of the respective college (who, in turn, approves and sends the
information to the Registrar), faculty members wishing to teach a course
in one of the Instructional Media Services' rooms must submit to the University
Librarian's Office a course syllabus, a letter describing the specific types
of technology and/or instructional media to be utilized, and the extent they
will be used in the course. A letter of support from the departmental chairperson
is also required. Due to the demand for the rooms, approvals from the University
Librarian's Office will be on a semester-by-semester basis. It should
be noted that unless there are significant and extenuating circumstances
surrounding the request (evidenced by a letter from the Registrar's office
that there is no other facility on campus that is available to house the
class), there will be no classes scheduled for any of the rooms where the
facility will be the primary meeting location for the entire semester. There
is simply too much demand for the rooms to accommodate such assignments.
The names of approved faculty will be kept on a list at the Instructional
Media Services desk and in the University Librarian's office. A
copy of that list will be forwarded to the Registrar, along with
the specific room numbers assigned.
After receiving notification of approval, the faculty member is
expected to notify his/her department chairperson. The chairperson
is expected to use the information when preparing the semester's
course schedule for the Dean and Registrar.
