History majors make great law students! While many majors will help prepare students for both law school and the law school admissions exam, students with B.A.s in history find themselves well prepared for both. According to the American Bar Association (ABA) the core skills and values necessary for successful completion of the J.D. include:
ABA HISTORY MAJORS
Analytic / Problem Solving Skills √
Critical Reading √
Writing Skills √
Oral Communication / Listening Abilities √
General Research Skills √

Xavier History majors often choose to pursue a degree in law. We have a number of students currently planning to attend law school as well as a number of graduates from law school over the last few years. Here is what a few of them had to say:
“A history degree creates a formidable foundation for students entering law school. The rigorous reading requirements are analogous to law school courses. Professors in the History Department passionately push students to reach new heights of academic success.” – Christopher Bordenave (XU, ’08); The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law (’12)
"I recently accepted an internship with the State Department’s African Affairs Bureau at the Consulate in Harare, Zimbabwe during summer 2012. I have found that my experience with the history department and learning from you has had a great impact on my career goals thus far, and I am thankful for that." Michael Caldwell Jr. (XU, '11); J.D. Candidate, Loyola Law ('14).
And another student, Rolando Urbina (XU 2005), completed Law School at Southern Law University Law Center ('11) and is now employed as an attorney at the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge.
Here in the History Department at Xavier University, we strive to provide you with all of those competencies and more! If you are interested in pre-law and history, please stop by our department and chat with us!
"History has thrust something upon me from which I cannot turn away." – Martin Luther King Jr.
