The Xavier Web Group has identified a known issue with Netscape 4 and
it's ability to accomodate layers and style sheets correctly, specifically (according to the Release Notes for Netscape 4.7) that it doesn't handle existing HTML files that contain CSS objects -- they may be removed from the file. There is one
known issue with using Netscape 4.x Communicator and the modern, XHTML Compliant
design:
- The Home Page renders acceptably in Netscape Navigator 4.
- The new University templates rely heavily on style sheets and layers, and formatting problems may render the page erroneously.
Netscape
4 is still available and useable at Xavier University for e-mail and it's
Composer function, but the Communicator module is unstable for
modern page authoring (identified as XHTML1.0 Transitional Compliance).
The software copyright covers the period 1994 - 99 and is no longer supported by the manufacturer.
Future enhancements
to XULA.edu may still have stability problems with this browser, even
if the above errors are corrected.
The suggested work around is to either view the site in Internet Explorer,
or a modern version of Netscape. For more information on browsers, please
see our FAQ for Computer Help page.
