HBCU - UP
Historically Black Colleges and Universities - Undergraduate Program
HBCU-UP is an NSF-sponsored
program designed to broaden
America's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
workforce. Xavier University of Louisiana has an esteemed history
in the STEM education and research successes with underrepresented
minorities. The goals of HBCU-UP
— to recruit and retain STEM students via an enriched, enhanced
educational program — is a major goal in Xavier's STEM disciplines
of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics,
and physics.

What can HBCU-UP do for you?
HBCU-UP helps STEM students through tutoring, mentoring,
advising, research, and summer enrichment programs.
Interestingly, this Program provides financial assistance
to atypical scholarship students. HBCU-UP awards financial
aid to STEM students that show great potential, so
not all awardees have the best GPA or ACT scores. Because
this Program is designed to recruit and retain STEM
majors, HBCU-UP students are given considerable educational
and enrichment assistance.
Xavier faculty are encouraged to participate in HBCU-UP
also. Xavier faculty in the STEM disciplines may be
funded for curriculum development. Also, travel grants
are available for faculty and their HBCU-UP student
researchers.
Middle and high school teachers are encouraged to participate
in our HBCU-UP Saturday workshops. These teachers will
collaborate with Xavier faculty to enact new pedagogical
approaches in math and science education. The workshops
are on Saturday mornings and participants receive a
stipend each semester.
What
are the qualifications to join HBCU-UP?
- Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors
in biology, chemistry, computer
science, engineering, mathematics,
physics, pre-med biology, or pre-med
chemistry are eligible for HBCU-UP.
- Incoming freshmen (in the summer
after high school graduation) can
participate in Experiential Problem-Solving
and Analytical Reasoning (EPsAR),
a summer bridge program to assist
students with less than desirable
ACT/SAT math scores.
- STEM students must have a minimum
2.3 GPA.
- HBCU-UP students must participate
in workshops, seminars, study groups
and eventually work as a tutor,
lab assistant, or research assistant.
- Students participating in MIE,
MARC, and RISE are not eligible
for HBCU-UP.
