Sister Mary Lurana Neely, S.B.S.

Sister Lurana Neely, a longtime Xavier University art professor who created the official Xavier seal, died Oct. 6, 2004. She was 86.

Sister Lurana was a member of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. In the 1940s, she taught music at Xavier Prep in New Orleans, and she received her master of fine arts degree in 1949 from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

She returned to New Orleans in 1950, joining the faculty at Xavier University, where she taught art full-time until 1977. She also was a longtime chairwoman of the Xavier Art Department. She was a frequent visitor at the Audubon Arts Center in Gert Town, where she taught art to neighborhood youngsters.

She continued her involvement in parish ministries and artistic projects until failing health in 1998 forced her to return to the order's Motherhouse in Pennsylvania.

Sister Lurana's artwork is included in the Blanche and Norman Francis art collection that will be shown at Xavier University later this year.

See her work!
