| We have gained final approval from the New Orleans City Council to
move forward with establishing the State Farm/Xavier University Education
Center. This building, which is located in the St. Roch neighborhood
at the corner of Marigny and North Dorgenois streets, is planned as
a base for the community outreach efforts of the Division of Education.
The State Farm Insurance Company donated to Xavier a 2500 square-foot
building and $150,000 for the renovations. The exterior of the building
will be repaired and repainted, while the interior will be modernized
to accommodate offices, meeting spaces and areas for computer training.
The renovations will include central air conditioning, improved plumbing,
upgraded electrical service, and a ramp for handicap access. Parking
will be provided in an existing parking lot that belongs to the State
Farm Insurance office on Elysian Fields Avenue. Demolition work was
completed earlier this year under a demolition permit to prepare for
construction. City Planning has given their final approval for these
plans as well. If all goes well, by the time this board meets, we hope
to have the building permit and can finalize plans and construction
cost.
