Political Science Internships

Pre-Law

The City of New Orleans and the network of Xavier University graduates provide two bases of support for an exciting legal internship program. Students can choose from paid (mostly seniors), academic credit, or experiential internships. Among the offices located in New Orleans offering Xavier students internships are: the Louisiana Supreme Court, New Orleans District Attorney’s Office, New Orleans City Attorney’s Office, local criminal and civil courts, juvenile courts, and area law firms. In addition, Xavier students have gained legal experience with the Tulane University Environmental Law Clinic, Loyola University Poverty Law Center, the Justice Center and the MADD organization.

International Affairs

Students may intern at City Hall with the Department of Economic Development or serve with the World Trade Center, New Orleans, or one of the foreign embassies or consulates located in the downtown area.

American Government, Public Affairs, and Public Administration

In the last fifteen years, two New Orleans’ mayors were former Xavier faculty and four members of the city council were Xavier graduates. These contacts have enabled hundreds of Xavier Political Science students to gain valuable internship experience in City Hall, the Louisiana State Office Building, or the Hale Boggs Federal Office Building. Students can choose between paid, academic credit, or experiential internships. Among the offices located in New Orleans offering Xavier students internships are: Office of the Mayor, New Orleans City Council members, VIGOR (Volunteers in Government that coordinate internships with city agencies), Louisiana Departments. of Labor and Family Services, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Dept. of Justice, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Homeland Security.
