The Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR): How did you find out about working on this research proposal?
Shana Williams (SW): I asked Dr. Crayton about research constantly. He needed time to pick students and I was blessed to be chosen.
CUR: What is your contribution to this proposal?
SW:I contribute to the project by performing PCR and Gel electrophoresis in an effort to amplify a specific exon within the Dscam gene. I also help maintain Dr. Crayton's live stock cultures of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.
CUR: How does this proposal fit into your academic and social schedule?
SW: This proposal fits perfectly. I do research on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The days that I’m not performing research I work.
CUR: Will this proposal assist you in your future academic/or career plans? If so, explain.
SW: Yes this proposal will assist me in my future plans. Research is needed in most health related careers. Research gives me the experience I need to have a head start.
CUR: Do you have any recommendations for future student assistants who will work in a similar field?
SW: My recommendation for future students is to approach research with an open mind. The topic might not seem interesting at first, but it could end up being the career of your dreams.
