The Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR): How did you find out about working on this research proposal?
Randal Harris (RH): I am an HBCU-UP Scholar, a program that gives a scholarship provided students conduct research or serve as a math/science tutor. I chose research and paired with Dr. Barbara Green (biology) who is currently working on some joint efforts with Dr. Mack Crayton and other members of the computer science department.
CUR: What is your contribution to this proposal?
RH: On Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm I am in the lab with Dr. Crayton learning various techniques for the big project. On Tuesdays from 11:45am to 12:30pm I attend Journal Club with Dr. B. Green to discuss and dissect scientific literature.
CUR: How does this proposal fit into your academic and social schedule?
RH: It fits neatly into my schedule and since both Dr. Green and Dr. Crayton are willing to work with my schedule nothing feels rushed.
CUR: Will this proposal assist you in your future academic/or career plans? If so, explain.
RH: This research opportunity will help me in the future. Primarily it gives me a chance to learn and explore the application of various ideas discussed in the class room. The skills I am learning will be very beneficial when participating in summer research as well as any research I conduct post Xavier. I will be familiar with various techniques, lab protocol, and my knowledge of scientific literature will be enhanced.
CUR: Do you have any recommendations for future student assistants who will work in a similar field?
RH: Don’t be afraid to ask a professor or anyone in a particular department that you’re interested in for opportunities. Most professors are very excited to share their work with students. So create your own opportunities!
