Majors and Minor Information

Welcome to the Computer Science Department at Xavier University of Louisiana. Our department offers a computer science major (cs), a computer information systems major (cis), and a computer science minor (csm). These studies prepare students for many different career fields and are fun, challenging, and ultimately rewarding. The Computer Science Department
is committed to preparing students for either a career in a computing field or for graduate study.

Advising & Graduating on-time

All computing majors should have:

  • access to their particular Xavier catalog. The catalog states the guidelines of the university and your major, gives an ordering of when courses should be taken, and lists the course descriptions. Due to recent curriculum changes, most students will observe the guidelines in the 2004-2006 catalog.
  • a copy of the pre-requisites dependency graph (cs graph, cis graph, or csm graph). This dependency graph shows the computing courses, the expected semester offering of those courses, and the course pre-requisites. Just print the dependency graph for your major.
  • and a course log sheet (cs course log, cis course log, csm course log). The course log sheet is used to record your grades in every required course. You will have met all curriculum requirements when the course log sheet is completed.

During (pre-)registration you will use the suggested program from the catalog, the course descriptions from the catalog, your major's pre-requisites graph, and your course log sheet. At the end of each semester you should update your course log sheet by recording each course grade and semester completed. For example, if you earned a 'B' in Data Structures in the Fall of 2006, then write "Fall 2006, B" next to the CPSC 2730 line of your course log sheet.

Computer Science Major

The Computer Science major studies the art and the science of computing. The art of computer science includes web design, graphics, multimedia, software engineering, and many other creative courses. The science of computing includes the theory of computing, database, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital logic design, algorithms, operating systems, architecture, and of course programming. The Computer Science Department is committed to preparing students for either a career in a computing field or for graduate study.

You should keep a copy of the computer science pre-requisite graph and continually update your computer science course log.

Computer Information Systems Major

The Computer Information Systems major studies the business and the science of computing. The business of computer information systems includes accounting, business administration, economics, sales, marketing, and software engineering. The science of computer information systems includes database, digital logic design, operating systems, and of course programming.

You should keep a copy of the computer information systems pre-requisite graph and continually update your computer information systems course log.

Computer Science Minor

The Computer Science minor has some of the art and some of the science of computing. The computer science minor studies software engineering, digital logic design, and of course programming.

You should keep a copy of the computer science minor pre-requisite graph and continually update your computer science minor course log.
