Our Goal:

To become a leading teaching, learning and resource center of China for students, educators, community groups, civic organizations, and businesses.

Our Objectives:

The Confucius Institute at Xavier University will fulfill its mission by achieving the following major objectives:

  1. Provide quality education, resources and services on Chinese language, culture, and economic development to Xavier students, local groups, government agencies, and businesses;
  2. Enhance China connections and awareness on Xavier campus and among the surrounding communities;
  3. Broaden CI network and actively engage in fundraising activities to facilitate the Confucius Institute as a dynamic and sustainable organization.

Our Staff

Yu Jiang 江瑜


As the inaugural director, Dr. Jiang has led the Confucius Institute since May 2012. Under his leadership, the Confucius Institute has become the No.1 Chinese language instruction center in the State of Louisiana and the go-to platform on Chinese culture, history, and travel for local government agencies, civic groups, and non-profit organizations.

Dr. Jiang received his B.A. in Archaeology from Beijing University in 1997, and Ph.D. in Chinese Art History from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in 2004.  He was the Paul Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution from 2004-2005, and a tenure-track assistant professor of art history at the Wilkes Honors College, Florida Atlantic University.  Beginning fall 2008, Dr. Jiang was an assistant professor of museum studies at Southern University at New Orleans and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in spring 2012.  Dr. Jiang has earned numerous fellowships and awards in his prior study and working experience, including a major grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents Traditional and Undergraduate Enhancement Program in 2012.  His scholarly publications focus on Chinese bronze and jade art.

Dr. Tao Yang 杨涛

Associate/Chinese Director & Associate Professor of Education

Dr. Yang joined the Confucius Institute in October 2016 from Hebei University, Xavier’s partner school in China. He received his Ph.D. in Chinese literature from Beijing Language and Culture University, the top language institution in China. Dr. Yang has focused on Chinese traditional culture, with particular interest on Confucianism, befitting his current role as the Associate/Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute.

Shu Peng 彭姝

Assistant Director 

Ms. Peng holds an M.S. in Communications from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, an M.A. in applied linguistics from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and an B.A in English from Xiangtan University. Prior to becoming the administrative specialist of the CI, Ms. Peng was an adjunct Mandarin instructor at Xavier University, the first Mandarin instructor of the CI. She brings a wealth of language and communication skills to the Confucius Institute.

Haiyan Wang 王海艳

Visiting Associate Professor of Chinese Language

Professor Wang holds  Master's degree in Chinese Language and Literature. She had been a highly successful language instructor at the College of International Exchange and Education, Hebei University since 2007.  At Xavier, Professor Wang teaches classes at elementary through advanced Chinese levels.  She combines students’ in-class learning with extracurricular activities, utilizing cutting-edge pedagogical tools and technology, and emphasizing students’ independent and critical thinking skills.  Through her dynamic and creative teaching methods, students learn to build strong Chinese language skills, and develop a deep understanding of Chinese history and culture.  Professor Wang also serves as the faculty advisor of the Xavier China Club and supervises the U.S.-China Strong Student Ambassador Program (Xavier chapter).

Yina Zhang 张怡娜

Chinese Instructor

Ms. Zhang received her B.A degree in Broadcasting and TV hosting from the Communication University of China, the No. 1 media university in China.  Recipient of prestigious certificates in TV Hosting and Level 1 Chinese Proficiency, Ms. Zhang was a weather anchor for Beijing TV from 2008 to 2010.  Since becoming the Chinese language instructor at the Xavier Confucius Institute in April 2016, Ms. Zhang has provided quality Chinese instruction to award-winning students on campus and in the community, including teaching courses at Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies, a top public elementary school in Jefferson Parish.  She has chaired or hosted major festivals and cultural events on Xavier campus, including the 2016 Chinese Moon Festival and Chinese language competitions for college and K-12 students.
