PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC ORGANIZATIONS

National Communication Association (NCA)
NCA is the largest national organization dedicated to communication studies. Researchers, educators, and professionals, work to understand and better all forms of human communication. Xavier students may present collaborative research alongside faculty at NCA's annual meeting.

Southern States Communication Association (SSCA)
SSCA is the southern regional organization dedicated to communication studies. In addition to its annual meeting, SSCA also hosts an undergraduate honors conference.

Louisiana Communication Association (LCA)
LCA is the state organization dedicated to communication studies. Xavier students are encouraged to submit their work for presentation at the annual LCA meeting.

Lamda Pi Eta
Lambda Pi Eta is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association. Xavier is forming a campus chapter in 2011-2012.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Faculty and students have partnered with the following community organizations through service-learning projects and community-based scholarship.

2-Cent
2-Cent is a collaborative effort of creative, frustrated, and comedic twenty-somethings. They all posses the innate ability to convey humor and urgency toward issues that plague not only New Orleans, but America in general. 2-Cent is a PBS documentary, an SNL skit and an In Living Color spoof all rolled into one.

Institute for Ethnic and Women's Studies (IWES)
The Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies is a national nonprofit community based organization headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, which was founded in 1993 in response to overwhelming health disparities among women of color.  IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families, especially those who are socio-economically disadvantaged.

Lafayette Academy Charter School
Lafayette Academy is the largest public charter elementary school in New Orleans.

Louisiana Bucket Brigade
The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is an environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state's oil refineries and chemical plants. The mission of the Louisiana Bucket Brigade is to support communities' use of grassroots action to create informed, sustainable neighborhoods free from industrial pollution.

Mondo Bizarro
MONDO BIZARRO is a New Orleans-based community art ensemble that has created original, multidisciplinary art and fostered partnerships in local, national and international communities. Its work is intentionally multidisciplinary, ranging from physical theater to large-scale community festivals; from social media to site-specific productions.

The Porch
The Porch is a community-based organization that is using the arts to affect social change. A grassroots organization instigated, post-Katrina, in New Orleans' 7th Ward, the Porch serves the community bounded by St. Bernard Avenue, N. Claiborne Avenue, Elysian Fields Avenue and St. Claude Avenues.

Sankofa CDC
Sankofa Community Development Corporation, founded in 2008, serves as a catalyst to revitalize New Orleans' Lower and Upper Ninth Ward and advances opportunities in the areas of urban revitalization, education, health, and economic development. Its goals include creating access to healthy food and improving the disproportionately higher than average health risks that exist within this community.
