Short Professional Biography

Dr. Watt earned dual B.S./M.S. degrees in chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University in 2002.  Her research in the lab of Dr. Tomasz Kowalewski culminated in an M.S. thesis describing the preparation and properties of conducting thiophene block copolymer nanowires for use in organic electronics.  Dr. Watt earned a Ph.D. in 2007 from the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she worked with Dr. David Collard to synthesize and characterize semifluorinated polythiophenes and conformationally-restricted oligothiophenes as charge transport layers and models, respectively.

Dr. Watt then served as a National Science Foundation Discovery Corps Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan, where she used sum-frequency generation spectroscopy in the lab of Dr. Zhan Chen to characterize the behavior of surfaces modified with polymer layers and with self-assembled films.  As part of her Fellowship, she also established a professional development program for chemistry graduate students and postdoctoral associates based on her research into their training experiences.  Dr. Watt joined the Xavier Chemistry Department in 2011.
