Farewell to the Old Chemistry Building

The Old Chemistry Building was demolished in March of 1988, after the Norman C. Francis Academic/Science Complex was finished. Any tears that were shed came from raw nostalgia, uninfluenced by reason. The Old Chemistry Building was far past its designed lifetime and on its last legs. Here are some images of the demolition, courtesy of Dr. Leonard Price. Here the demolition begins, as the old Premedical Office bites the dust. The Barn (Xavier gym) is in the background.

Demolition continues on the Premed Office and MSL (Modular Studies Laboratory, a name for the room in which all General Chemistry drills were held). The Norman C. Francis Academic/Science Complex (without its extension) is visible in the background.

The Premed Office/MSL is gone, and the Quantitative Analysis lab is going. You can see lab benches and even some old plastic water jugs inside the old building. Another vestige of the past: the purple K&B drugstore logo just to the right of the cab.

The Quant Lab is gone, and the Stockroom and some office spaces are about to go. Dr. McKenna, formerly of the Sociology Department, bids the building farewell.
