Xavier’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) consists of 18 Academic Departments and Divisions who together with the College Deans share responsibility for the quality and integrity of the academic programs of the College as well as for our fidelity to Xavier’s mission.

The CAS Dean’s Office located on the first floor of the Administration building provides service to faculty and students on matters pertaining to teaching and learning including curricula, academic progress, and degree requirements.

The Dean and Associate Dean provide oversight for established policies and procedures found in the University Catalog and in portions of the Faculty Handbook relevant to the CAS. The Associate Dean for Scholarship provides oversight and guidance for faculty on all issues related to developing and funding scholarship and research.

Through their leadership responsibilities in the CAS Academic Assembly, Academic Council and Planning Council, the Deans assure that the faculty exercise their rights and responsibilities for oversight of academic policy.  The CAS Constitution states:

The faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences accepts primary responsibility for college policy and decision-making in the following areas: curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction, research, faculty welfare, aspects of student life which relate directly to the educational process, and the granting of degrees.

Through their engagement in the programmatic and attitudinal assessment procedures appropriate to their office, the Deans offer leadership and encourage leadership in others in identifying and implementing those college initiatives that will strengthen and further Xavier’s Mission.
